The sea is our home, our playground, and our passion. Yet the beauty of the oceans is threatened. As sailors, we are privileged to experience nature up close and at the same time bear a special responsibility for its protection.

At Sun Charter, "Green Sailing" is more than just a buzzword – it is a philosophy we want to share with our customers.

Learn how you can make a big difference with simple measures and make your sailing trip even more sustainable.

Why Sustainable Sailing is More Important Than Ever

The world's oceans suffer from plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Even yachting leaves its mark. But everyone can help minimize these impacts. Sustainable sailing means respecting the environment, supporting local communities, and preserving the beauty of the seas for future generations.

Your Checklist for Green Sailing with Sun Charter

21.svgWaste Management Onboard

Waste Separation: Separate your waste onboard (plastic, paper, residual waste) and dispose of it in designated containers at ports. Never throw waste overboard!

Avoid Plastic: Reduce single-use plastic. Use reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and food containers. Microplastics: Avoid products containing microplastics (e.g., certain cosmetics).

21.svgAnchoring with Care

Protect Seagrass Meadows: Anchor only on sandy bottoms. Seagrass meadows (Posidonia oceanica) are vital ecosystems and nurseries for many marine creatures. They are often protected, and anchoring there is prohibited.

Choose Anchor Spots: Use nautical charts and echo sounders to find sandy areas. Look for buoy fields for mooring.

21.svgSave Water and Energy

Freshwater: Use freshwater sparingly. Take short showers, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

Electricity: Turn off lights and electronic devices when not needed. Use onboard batteries efficiently.

Solar/Wind: Many modern yachts are equipped with solar panels or wind generators that contribute to sustainable energy production.

21.svgUse Eco-friendly Products

Cleaning Agents: Use eco-friendly cleaning and dishwashing products.

Personal Care: Use biodegradable shower gels and shampoos.

Sunscreen: Choose products free of harmful chemicals, sunscreen free of oxybenzone and octinoxate – protecting not only your skin but also the sea.

21.svgRespectful Interaction with Wildlife

Keep Distance: Maintain distance from marine animals like dolphins, whales, and turtles. Do not chase or disturb them.

Fishing: Observe local fishing bans and regulations. Fish only when it is allowed and sustainable.

Underwater World: Do not touch corals, starfish, or other marine life while snorkeling, as they are very sensitive and recover slowly.

21.svgSupport Local Economy

Shopping: Buy fresh products at local markets and small shops.

Restaurants: Visit local taverns and restaurants offering regional specialties.

Culture: Respect local customs and traditions.

The 10 Golden Rules for Water Sports Enthusiasts

As early as 1980, the German Sailing Association, together with environmental and sports associations, formulated ten central rules for nature-friendly behavior on the water. They remain part of the training and an important guide for all who wish to sail sustainably.
